RICE 2008 is the inaugural Raffles International Conference on Education organised by Raffles Junior College. The two-day educators’ conference will be held in Singapore from 10 to 11 March 2008, with a concurrent youth forum, the Raffles Community Leader Forum (RCLF), held from 7 to 11 March 2008.

The plenary sessions and concurrent workshops cater to high school and pre-tertiary educators interested in exploring curriculum-community innovations. These partnership innovations will be grouped into six sub-themes:

• Humanities & the Arts
• Mathematics & the Sciences
• Character & Leadership Education
• Sports, Health & Physical Education
• Educational Guidance & Development

Professor Deborah Eyre is the Director of the Academy for Gifted and Talented Youth (NAGTY). The Academy was created by the UK government in 2002 and based in the University of Warwick. It has a remit to lead improvements in education for gifted and talented children up to the age of 19 years.

An ex teacher, LEA adviser and university academic, her current role combines advising and shaping the gifted dimension of national education initiatives as well as directing NAGTY’s  work with schools, students and parents.

Deborah has had a long-standing interest in the education of able/gifted pupils and has worked in this field for over twenty five years. She is a leading academic researcher with a particular interest in classroom pedagogy for gifted and talented children. Her academic work includes models for helping teachers improve their practice in schools (Structured Tinkering) and for integrating gifted education into general education structures (The English Model). She is author of many books and articles including the seminal text ‘Able Children in Ordinary Schools’ - a guidance handbook for teachers and head teachers.

During her career, she established the Oxford Brookes Research Centre for Able Pupils, designed the government’s National Training Programme for Co-ordinators of Gifted and Talented Pupils in EiC schools and served as a specialist adviser to the House of Commons Education Select Committee.

Deborah is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a Professor of Education at the University of Warwick, Trustee of the National Primary Trust and an Executive Committee Member of the WCGTC (World Council for Gifted and Talented Children).

Chris Yapp has been in the IT Industry since 1980. Most recently he is Head of Public Sector Innovation. Before that he has held a number of roles at Honeywell, ICL and Hewlett Packard.

He has been involved in Public Sector IT for the majority of that period and has been involved in many policy and advisory groups on strategic and management aspects of IT.

Chris is a Patron of National Association of Able Children in Education (NACE), and a Trustee of world e-citizens. Chris is also an Associate of the think tank, DEMOS, and a former Director of the Internet Society of England. He is a past Trustee of the School for Social Entrepreneurs and the British Committee of the UK-Canada colloquia. He is a frequent public speaker and writer on the e-agenda. His most recent publication is 'Personalization of education in the 21st century'.
